THE NUMISMATIST
(from the article in the March 2002 edition)
Silver Hoard of Slain
Las Vegas Collector Sold
More than
100,000 silver dollars from the estate of murdered Las Vegas casino
owner Ted Binion were purchased for over $3 million by Spectrum
Numismatics International, according to Mark Albarian, president and CEO
of Goldline International, Inc. Goldline has been authorized to
market the coins. Approximately 90 percent of the pieces will be
sold to individual collectors, with the remaining specimens offered at
auction, Albarian says.
Binion was murdered in 1998 by Rick Tabish, the
man who had been hired to build the vault in which the coins were to be
stored. The crime was carried out with the help of Sandy Murphy,
Binion's former lover.
The impressive collection was started by the
victim's parents, Benny and Teddy Jane, who owned
Binion's Horseshoe
Casino in Las Vegas. The Binion pieces have been graded and
encapsulated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation of America. Each
encapsulation carries a special green label displaying an outline of
three cowboys and the web address www.binioncollection.com.
